چکیده

The goal of the system presented in this paper is to support several facial surgeries which are aiming to transform an unsymmetrical face to a symmetric one. There are two main techniques to achieve this goal: Distraction of the lower jaw and adding or removing tissue or bone at certain facial regions. Both planning tasks are done based on segmented CT or MRI data. The distraction of the lower jaw is simulated by cutting the jaw, moving it in 3D along a distraction axis and choosing a distractor for this procedure after determining, which is the best result. Furthermore we are working on consideration of soft tissue movement so the patient can see what he or she will look like after the surgery. For supporting implants in craniofacial surgery, we are proposing a tool based on symmetry considerations. Nowadays, if implants have to be fitted to the patient’s bone, they are handmade while the surgery is running. This is quite time consuming and it would be helpful to shorten this procedure by producing the implants preoperatively. Our System allows to determine regions where implants should be set and proposes an initial contour for the implants.

Successful Reconstruction of Nerve Defects Using Distraction Neurogenesis with a New Experimental Device

Introduction: Repair of peripheral nerve injuries is an intensive area of challenge and research in modern reconstructive microsurgery. Intensive research is being carried out to develop effective alternatives to the standard nerve autografting, avoiding its drawbacks. The aim of the study was to evaluate the effectiveness of a newly designed mechanical device for the reconstruction of the...

Treatment of Hemifacial Microsomia: A Case Report

Introduction: Hemifacial microsomia (HFM) is a branchial arch syndrome and the second most common craniofacial birth defect after cleft lip and palate. This syndrome involves the facial skeleton and ear. The most important goal in treatment of HFM is to improve facial symmetry. Traditionally, segment repositioning and costochondral graft were used for the correction of mandibular asymmetry but ...

Curvilinear Segmental Mandibular Reconstruction Utilizing Distraction Osteogenesis and Early Open Callus Manipulation

The authors present a new technique for reconstruction of large curvilinear mandibular defects with distraction osteogenesis and early open callus manipulation. In phase 1, transport disks are created from mandibular bone and distracted across the entire length of the defect, without the restriction from a mandible plate fixation. This allows for full-length distraction until enough regenerate ...

Complex Nasal and Periorbital Reconstruction Using Locoregional Flaps: A Case Report

Facial reconstruction is one of the most challenging problems faced by a reconstructive surgeon. We present a case of complex facial reconstruction with a composite trauma to the nose resulting in near total loss of skin and lining along with complete loss of left eyebrow with exposed frontal bone and partial loss of the left eyelid. We combined a temporoparietal fascial flap for reconstruction...

Correction of post ankylotic facial asymmetry with bimaxillary distraction osteogenesis—Case report

Facial asymmetry can be acquired or congenital. Patients with facial asymmetry are not always functionally disturbed by the malfunction but are usually very much disturbed by their external appearance. Depending on the degree of asymmetry and deformation, the surgical procedure may vary in complexity and extent. The extent of surgery can range from a genioplasty procedure to bimaxillary osteoto...
